Shooting Through The Moment

So the last session that I did, was my first attempt at photographing a family in a strict documentary/photojournalistic style.  No posing, no suggestions on activities, no “hey stand over here in this awesome light”, I had ZERO control.  I was definitely out of my comfort zone to say the least!  BUT…I had wanted to do this with a family (that is not my own) for far too long, so I was very excited to see how it would go.  I have been a huge fan of Kirsten Lewis ever since I stumbled onto her Creative Live Class over a year ago.  I devoured the information she shared in this class.  I had so many ah-ha moments, it was unreal.  THEN, she just finished up another class that I was lucky enough to catch the 2nd airing for free.  More ah-ha moments.  Like “shooting through the moment”.  I’ve heard this a few times before from various “photography for dummies” type websites and books, but in Kristen’s 2nd class, she really broke it down in a way that made sense to me.  So, needless to say, during my first documentary style family session I shot through many moments and I was very pleased with the results.  I’m not going to be nominated to join Magnum Photos, but I am pretty darn happy with this little gem!

The serioes of shots leading up to this moment, was of her blowing on her pasta, pulling the fork up, trying to wrap the cheese around the fork, etc, but then she made this funny little face.  Perfect.
